Panamaxes are the largest size vessels able to transit the Panama Canal fully laden affording these vessels the flexibility to trade efficiently in the Atlantic and Pacific basins.  OSG’s Panamax tanker fleet trades in the Atlantic markets between the Caribbean Sea loading crude and petroleum products for the United States, or from Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and West Africa to the United States and in the Pacific markets loading from Peru, Ecuador and South America for the U.S. West Coast and West Coast Central America.

In partnership with Sociedad Anónima de Navegación Petrolera S.A. of Chile (SONAP), OSG established Panamax International in 2004. Panamax International was created to enhance the earnings for both partners by leveraging their expertise in the Caribbean and South American trades.  Panamax International affords OSG the ability to improve vessel utilization via COAs, backhaul voyages (more laden voyages via the Panama Canal) and operating efficiencies, such as better scheduling of available tonnage.

OSG’s Panamax fleet is balanced strategically among medium and long-term charters and spot market voyage charters.  This balance enables OSG to capitalize on short-term rate increases, while maintaining a base of fixed-rate contracts.
