As a major international shipping company that adheres to strong corporate governance practices throughout its business, OSG strives to set the Gold Standard of technical operations. According to Captain Robert E. Johnston, Head of Global Shipping Operations at OSG,

“The Gold Standard is about establishing operating practices that go well beyond what is required by the regulators. The Gold Standard is about striving to operate our vessels better, more efficiently and more effectively. It’s about implementing our philosophy of continuously improving every aspect of operating a ship and providing our mariners a safe, high quality place to work in an environment where they can thrive professionally. The Gold Standard will be achieved by providing the necessary resources for our crews and ships and ensuring that our people, both ashore and at sea, are motivated to perform to this standard.”

Both ashore and at sea, OSG is doing its part to protect the environment through air, water and energy conservation programs, including:

Silicone Coatings
Hull Performance Systems
Pit Stop Maintenance
Electronic Reporting
Quality Assurance Projects

Some of the initiatives in place that lay the foundation for setting the Gold Standard include:

  • Operational Integrity Group. This 11-person team of senior shoreside and sea staff conducts fleet audits and investigations to ensure compliance with Company vessel operating policies. The group also makes recommendations to the Head of Shipping Operations, contributing to the continuous improvement across the fleet and in shoreside technical offices. In 2006, the group conducted more than 200 audits on board the Company’s U.S. and International Flag operating fleets.

  • Open Reporting System provides seafarers and shoreside personnel with the ability to report any unusual or irregular SQE matter on a confidential basis.

  • New Technology developed and deployed across the fleet such as the Enviro-Logger, Enviro-Tags and polishing filters, has improved compliance with environmental protection requirements.

  • Staff Feedback and New Ideas gathered through periodic surveys of shipboard personnel garners new ideas on how to enhance system and management processes, environmental equipment, personnel management, purchasing practices and protective equipment.
