In order to have best-in-class crews on board its International and U.S. Flag ships, OSG trains its crews to its own standards as well as to the Standards for Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
- Ship-specific familiarization training for all seafarers includes safety training drills and safety meetings, on board training and computer-based training.
- The International Development and Environmental Shipping School (IDESS) in Subic Bay, the Philippines, and the Norwegian Training Center in Manila (NTC-M) offer OSG’s international crews safety-related and skill-development courses. Training curriculum is not limited to courses mandated by STCW for rank and certification, but ranges from Navigation Refreshers and Control Engineering courses, to Company-specific Tanker Operations and Bilge Water Waste Oil Management programs. Customized courses such as Manned Model and Ship Handling have been designed to reflect the specialization of OSG-designed ships.
- For new staff, prior to any tour on board an OSG vessel, indoctrination to OSG’s global policies, procedures, operating principles and guidelines is required. Training includes reporting, auditing and record-keeping.
To provide career development opportunities, OSG conducts annual performance reviews of all seafarers. The Company has developed a Competence Development Management Tool (CDMT), a system that monitors the ongoing development of all seafarers in an objective manner. CDMT develops a road map that reflects the STCW certification and competency requirements for each rank per ship type, Company-specific requirements and on board job skills. To earn promotions, seafarers attend shoreside training courses and are assessed on board by senior officers and attending superintendents. Sea service records are also evaluated.
OSG is proud to employ more than 3,500 mariners within its International Flag and U.S. Flag fleet. To learn more about job opportunities available, click here.
